FKK & Laufhaus Amsterdam

FKK, Laufhaus and the Amsterdam Private House

How the German-speaking adult-club formats differ from a licensed Amsterdam private house, where the overlap actually sits, and what visitors from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland should expect.

"FKK" and "Laufhaus" are German terms for two specific formats of regulated adult entertainment, common in Germany, Austria, and parts of Switzerland. Neither format exists in its original form in Amsterdam, Dutch licensing law shapes the category differently. A licensed brothel and sex club in Amsterdam, like ours, overlaps with the FKK and Laufhaus formats on one portion of the evening but is not the same thing.

The German format

What is an FKK club?

FKK, Freikörperkultur, originally refers to the German tradition of clothing-optional social spaces. In adult entertainment, an FKK club is a regulated venue combining sauna, bar, pool, and private rooms, where guests, hosts, and the women working there may be in various states of undress in the public areas. Pioneered by venues like FKK Sharks and FKK Oase in Germany, the format spread across central Europe in the 2000s.

The German FKK format is licensed differently from Dutch private brothels. Amsterdam does not have a true FKK in the German sense, Dutch labour law and the structure of the Dutch exploitatievergunning do not accommodate the same model. What Amsterdam does have is a category of licensed private brothels and sex clubs that overlap with an FKK on the private-suite portion of the evening only. There is no pool, no sauna, no clothing-optional lounge. If those define the experience you are looking for, you are looking for an FKK, not for an Amsterdam private house.

The Austrian-Swiss format

What is a Laufhaus?

A Laufhaus, literally "walking house", is a licensed building containing multiple individually rented rooms, where women rent their rooms and meet guests independently. The format is common in Vienna, parts of Switzerland, and the German border regions. Each room is its own micro-venue.

The Dutch equivalent is closest to raamprostitutie, window prostitution, concentrated in the Red Light District (De Wallen). Like a Laufhaus, women rent the rooms (or windows) and operate independently within the regulated structure. Unlike a Laufhaus, the windows face the public street.

Amsterdam does not have a true Laufhaus in the Austrian-Swiss sense. A licensed brothel or sex club, like Club Golden Key, operates under a different model: the women work within the house arrangement, payment is settled with the host, and the structure is closer to a private club than to individual room rentals.

What to expect in Amsterdam

What German-speaking guests find in Amsterdam

Guests from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland often arrive in Amsterdam with FKK or Laufhaus expectations. The Dutch system offers something different, not a substitute:

Most guests who know the German-speaking model adapt quickly. The Amsterdam private brothel format trades the spa atmosphere of an FKK for higher discretion, smaller scale, and a more personal arrangement of the evening.

Our house

Club Golden Key: not an FKK, but adjacent

Club Golden Key is a licensed brothel at Overtoom 294, Amsterdam, operating as a sex club. We have operated continuously since 1986 under the same family, the same licence (ASD 1054 CJ/B002), and the same address. Two minutes from the Vondelpark, about ten from the city centre.

For guests visiting Amsterdam who know FKK or Laufhaus and want a Dutch licensed brothel with a comparable private-suite portion, we are the longest-established option. We are not an FKK and not a Laufhaus. The format is an Amsterdam sex club: a bar and lounge on the ground floor, six private suites, one beside the bar and five above.
