Sex Club Amsterdam

A private sex club at Overtoom 294, two minutes from the Vondelpark. The oldest licensed venue of its kind in the city, run by the same family since the year it opened.

In short

A sex club is an indoor, licensed venue. Not the street.

Amsterdam has carried a reputation for an open attitude to sex work since the city kept its legal trade visible after most other European capitals pushed theirs underground. That visibility, the windows of the Red Light District, is one part of the picture. The other part is the licensed indoor venues, which work under quieter terms.

A private sex club, in Amsterdam, is a licensed indoor venue (a seksinrichting in Dutch legal parlance) where adults can meet, drink, and arrange company in private rooms. There are no windows facing the street, no walk-by display, no published price boards, and no public profiles of the women who work there. Visitors arrive at the door, are received by a host, and the evening takes place behind a closed front.

Why licensing matters

A licence is the difference.

Since the year 2000, when the Netherlands repealed the brothel ban (the Opheffing van het algemeen bordeelverbod), indoor sex venues have operated under municipal exploitation licences. In Amsterdam, this licence is issued by the Gemeente. It brings the venue inside the system: periodic inspection, identification of every person working there, hygiene standards, labour-condition compliance, and tax visibility.

A meaningful share of venues marketed as private sex clubs in the city operate outside that licensed system. Without the licence, there is no inspection, no documented worker protection, and, for the guest, no clear recourse if something goes wrong. The difference is not a marketing detail. It shows up in how the evening is run, who is in the rooms, and what they expect from the venue.

Club Golden Key operates under exploitatievergunning ASD 1054 CJ/B002, issued by the Gemeente Amsterdam. The number is published on every page of this site, not because it is required to be visible, but because the alternative, venues that do not say, has become noisy enough that saying it matters.

Heritage

Forty years on the Overtoom.

Club Golden Key opened in 1986. That makes it pre-date the 2000 reform by fourteen years, it was already operating as an indoor venue when the law changed, and it has been at the same address, under the same family, ever since. There are few continuous operators of this length in the category, in any European city.

Time on the same street produces a particular kind of place: one that does not need to perform for the door. Most of our guests are returning. Of those who arrive for the first time, a majority come on recommendation.

A visit

How an evening unfolds.

The bar and lounge are one room. You arrive, the host welcomes you, you have a drink and look around. This is where the host introduces you to the women; they stay seated, you make the choice. If an arrangement is to follow, the terms are agreed at the bar, before the door of a private suite closes. Payment is in venue: cash, debit card, Visa or Mastercard. There is no online prepayment and no booking system.

Questions

Asked, in this category.

What is a sex club in Amsterdam, in the legal sense?

In Dutch law, a sex club (commonly listed as a "seksinrichting") is a venue where sexual services are offered indoors under a municipal licence. Since the 2000 repeal of the brothel ban (Opheffing Bordeelverbod), these venues operate under an exploitatievergunning issued by the local council. The licence sets requirements for inspection, identification of staff, hygiene, and labour conditions.

How does a private sex club differ from the Red Light District?

The Red Light District is an open public neighbourhood with window prostitution and street traffic. A private sex club is an indoor venue with no windows on the street and no walk-by display. Visitors arrive at the door discreetly, are received by a host, and the evening takes place inside.

Is Club Golden Key a licensed sex club?

Yes. Club Golden Key operates under an exploitatievergunning issued by the Gemeente Amsterdam, licence number ASD 1054 CJ/B002. It has been open continuously since 1986 at the same address, Overtoom 294, and is the oldest licensed venue of its kind in the city still run by the same family.

Do I need to reserve in advance to visit a sex club?

At Club Golden Key, no. We deliberately do not run a booking system. Visitors arrive at the door any night within opening hours, are welcomed by the host, and the evening is shaped from there. Other venues in Amsterdam vary; some take reservations, others do not.

Is Club Golden Key a strip club?

No. A strip club is licensed for adult entertainment without on-site sex services. Club Golden Key is a licensed sex club and brothel, services happen in private suites after introductions at the bar. We do not have a stage, dancers, or strip performances.

Is Club Golden Key a swingers club or club libertin?

No. A swingers or libertin club is a venue for couples and singles who participate together. Club Golden Key is a sex club and brothel, guests visit to spend time with the women who work with us. The two formats are different categories under Dutch law and we are not licensed for swingers club activity.
